A cousin to the cheerful marigold, Calendula flowers (Calendula officinalis) are famous for their bright yellow colour and are well-known to herbalists for benefiting the skin, including providing antioxidant protection (Ejiohuo et al., 2024), protection against oxidative stress (Fonseca et al., 2010), regeneration of skin cells (Hormozi et al., 2019), soothing inflammation (Kiaei et al., 2018), and other skin healing properties, making it ideal for things like soothing sun burn, mild burns, bug bites, minor scrapes, cuts, and irritations, and plain old dry or chapped skin. It has even been shown to exhibit supportive healing action for more serious conditions, such as cancer (Zournatzis et al., 2025). Scientific analysis reveals the presence of a variety of bioactive compounds in Calendula responsible for this range of healing effect, including steroids, terpenoids, triterpenoids, phenolic acids, flavonoids, carotenoids, essential oils (Ejiohuo et al., 2024), lipids, terpenoids, coumarins and quinones (Zournatzis et al., 2025). The petals of the Calendula flower are frequently incorporated into homemade salves, infused oils, soaps, and lotions for external use.
