What are B vitamins, anyway?
B vitamins are a group of eight individual vitamins that together are referred to as B-complex. While they work together to help convert our food into fuel thereby keeping up our energy, reducing stress and enhancing mood, they all have specific jobs – supporting healthy skin and hair, working as antioxidants to help to prevent early aging and memory loss, boosting levels of HDL (good) cholesterol, forming red blood cells and maintaining the central nervous system. They are water soluble, meaning they are not stored in the body and need to be replaced every day.
CanPrev’s Synergy B is an innovative vitamin B complex that delivers the full spectrum of B vitamins in their preferred forms, plus an impressive 200 mg of L-Theanine daily, as well as spirulina: a blue green algae that supplies a rich source of phytonutrients, carotene and additional B vitamins. CanPrev’s in-house team of naturopathic doctors have formulated a unique B-complex brand that contains the full spectrum of B vitamins in addition to complementary and enhancing support supplements that you won’t find anywhere else. In essence, Synergy B offers an excellent combination of nutrients to support the body and relax the mind.
Superior folic acid/ folate
Methylfolate, also called 5-MTHF, is the active circulating form of folate used in the body’s one-carbon/methylation cycle. Standard folic acid must be converted through several steps before it becomes 5-MTHF. For people with reduced conversion capacity, such as some MTHFR genetic variants or other metabolic bottlenecks, methylfolate seems to be a more direct option. (NIH, 2022)
Superior B12
Methylcobalamin, one form of B12, is already one of the body’s metabolically active B12 forms. Cyanocobalamin and hydroxocobalamin must be converted into active forms, but taking the methylated form allows the body to skip this step. An added benefit is that methylated forms of B vitamins (especially B12 and folate) work together in the methionine cycle, helping recycle homocysteine back into methionine. This is relevant for DNA synthesis, neurological function, red blood cell formation, and methylation chemistry.(NIH, 2025)
L-Theanine
In their natural forms, plants always include “antidotes” to any compounds which may be problematic in the plant. L-theanine is found in green tea leaves, and provides a calming counterbalance to the stimulating effect of the tea leaf’s caffeine. Used by itself, l-theanine helps provide a documented alert-but-calm benefit (Hidsee et al, 2019) , so is the perfect companion to a powerful b-complex that could have you zooming with energy.
Human Electro-encephalo-gram (EEG) studies have revealed that L-theanine influences brain-wave activity, particularly alpha waves, which are commonly associated with a calm, relaxed-but-alert state. Research has shown changes in alpha activity after L-theanine intake, especially during relaxation or stress-response testing (Nobre, Rao & Owen, 2008) (Gomez-Ramirez et al, 2008) (Evans et al, 2021)
No PABA
You might’ve noticed that PABA (para-aminobenzoic acid) is absent from this B complex, but present in cheaper ones on the market. PABA is sometimes grouped with the B-vitamin family, but it is not considered an essential B vitamin for humans. Besides not being essential, PABA is historically associated with topical sunscreen use, and sensitivity/allergic reactions are one of the concerns around it. It may also reduce the effectiveness of sulfonamide antibiotics, so why even include it?
