This is our original African Black Shampoo formula, created as a concentrated botanical scalp and hair treatment for individuals dealing with dryness, brittleness, dullness, or chronically dehydrated hair and other scalp conditions. Unlike conventional shampoos that rely heavily on detergents and synthetic foaming agents, this formula is built around traditional African black soap combined with botanical oils, herbal extracts, and essential oils to provide a deeper cleansing and conditioning experience.
The consistency of this original formula is intentionally thin and fluid due to its high concentration of natural ingredients and absence of synthetic stabilizers or heavy commercial thickeners. Natural separation may occur over time, therefore shaking well before each use is recommended. Many customers use this formula more like a scalp treatment wash than a standard daily shampoo.
African black soap has traditionally been used for scalp cleansing and skin care due to its rich mineral and botanical content. In this formula, it is paired with horsetail extract and nourishing oils including jojoba, argan, and grapeseed to help support dry, coarse, damaged, overprocessed, or moisture-depleted hair textures. The oil-rich profile leaves the hair feeling softer, more conditioned, and less stripped than many conventional shampoos.
Essential oils of rosemary, tea tree, pine, lemon, and grapefruit create a fresh herbal aroma while contributing to the overall cleansing experience. Sandalwood distillate provides additional botanical support and helps round out the earthy scent profile naturally present in authentic African black soap formulations.
Due to the concentrated nature of this formula, it is especially well suited for use as a once or twice weekly scalp and moisture treatment. Some individuals leave the lather on the scalp for several minutes before rinsing to allow the botanical ingredients additional contact time. It may also be useful for individuals seeking heavier scalp conditioning support or those transitioning away from heavily synthetic commercial hair products.
Hair texture, water quality, frequency of washing, and styling habits can all affect the experience and performance of traditional soap-based shampoos. It does take a little getting used to, as it leaves a slight residue behind but it definitely cleared up my dry patchy scalp issues. Surprisingly enough, I do not have to use a detangler after because there’s no vigorous scrubbing required during shampooing.

Just ordered three more bottles. This shampoo makes my hair feel thicker and more substantial then any before in my life, and I’m in my 50s. Also it leaves my hair feeling soft and with a nice glow. I’m not big on the smell – sort of turpentine-y, but it does dissipate on drying. The shampoo is also of thinner consistency than those I’ve used before, so it requires care in application, especially for long hair. Definitely worth a reorder.
