Cranberries help with urinary tract health. Studies have shown that cranberries can help lessen the risk and frequency of urinary tract infection (UTI) by preventing bacteria from adhering to the bladder walls. This same property helps protect dental, gum, and oral health by preventing bacteria from sticking to the teeth and gums, and balancing the acid-alkaline levels in the mouth.
Cranberries are also high in antioxidants. A study found that out of 20 common fruits, cranberries have the highest level of phenols (a type of antioxidant). Like their cousin blueberries, they are also high in proanthocyanidins, so can benefit eye and liver health. Other antioxidants they’ve been shown to contain include quercetin, myricetin, peonidin, and ursolic acid. Although the drying process does reduce the vitamin content of cranberries as compared to the fresh version, minerals such as potassium and calcium remain, as well as trace minerals, and some vitamin A, K, and C.
Cranberries may help with gut health. Studies have shown that they can improve gut bacteria in people who consume meat, dairy, and sugar, and also reduce bile acids in the gut that have a link to colon and gastrointestinal issues.
